This Kona crab was in the shallows and not bothered by us which I found unusual. Initially I assumed it was a dead crab or possibly just a shed carapace.

But when I got close I could see movement in its mouth parts. I was surprised that it didn't back under the sand as I got so close. I lifted it out of the sand and it humg around for a while and numerous dives down to visit. Ultimately it backed in until just its eyes and a small portion of its carapace were exposed.
