While Doug and I were out on the surf skis and in addition to a few pods we hoped might swim our way , we would see a single whale come to the surface and blow a few times and then dive down with its tail coming out; indicative of a deep dive. I suspected it was a singer and suggested we paddle over where we had seen it go down. As we got closer we started hearing the song vibrate and come through our boats. Even closer, you could hear the song come up through the water. I stopped and slipped over board. I could hear and feel the song coming from in front and to the left and swam a little bit until I could see his tail coming up out of the deep blue. The water had a very fine "snow" which impeeded the visibility some. In the very first shot below, I was right above the whale and dove down probably 15' to get the shot.

I have come upon singers now a few times and it is amazing to see them suspended upside down with head straight down and tail up towards the surface. You can hear the song from miles away but this close, you feel it as well as hear it. This whale likely saw me as I swam off to one side to see it from a different view and it slowly swam off a ways. We did not pursue it and left it in its solitude and song. We could hear it singing on and off, in our boats as we drifted away. It came back up for air and Alice got a shot of its tail as it went back down to continue:
